New arrivals from the "west side" (as we refer to the Puget Sound region), sometimes lament that there are "no trees" in our area. It's true that the Palouse was never forested. The ancient open prairies are now covered with highly productive wheat, pea, and lentil farms. But Pullman itself is full of trees. This view of Pioneer Hill shows very few of the many houses on the hill--hidden by the many mature trees.

Pullman is built on hills, and people commonly give their home's location by referring to the hill it's on. The main ones are Pioneer (the first settled), College Hill, Military Hill, and Sunnyside Hill. The last sprawls so far that it's almost a range. Then there is the hill between Stadium Way and Valley Road that I've heard referred to occasionally as Regents Hill, but that name hasn't caught on.
