UCOLL 300 - Unit IV - In-Text Citation

Below are a few examples of direct quotes and text which paraphrases information from another source. How would you signify the in-text or paranthetical citation? How would you write the source citation as it would appear in the bibliography?

My paraphrase:

Others have noted that Lee Marshall's book, Bob Dylan: The Never Ending Star , is less for the casual reader than the serious scholar.

Where the information came from:

I read this in David R. Shumway's review, “Bob Dylan: The Never Ending Star” which was in volume 20, issue 4 of the Journal of Popular Music Studies (2009). I found the article in the Wiley Interscience database.

The URL was: http://www3.interscience.wiley.com/cgi-bin/fulltext/121632271/HTMLSTART. The article appeared on pages 444-448. Online, though, there were no page numbers dividing up the article. The information I am referring to appeared in the third paragraph of the article)

Let's say you are working with the APA style. Your task then is to:

  • look up and see how APA cites in text, and make that notation.
  • format the reference (where the information came from) for the bibliography

My paraphrase / quote:

Reuss states that, "In summing up Guthrie's formative years and the environment that molded the directions his talents would take him, it may be said that the cultural milieus of the Oklahoma and Texas periods accomplished different functions."

Where the information came from:

Where the information came from: "Woodie Guthrie and His Folk Tradition" by Richard A. Reuss. The article appeared in The Journal of American Folklore, volume 83, number 329. The July - September issue of 1970, on pages 273 to 303. The quote above appeared on page 277 of the article.
