As the Head, Library Systems, I coordinate the unit's work, staffing, and budgeting. I work with colleagues and vendors to identify technologies and products that could be used to enhance services for Libraries users. I represent the Libraries on campus-wide automation and data security groups.

I am currently serving on the implementation team for the Orbis Cascade Alliance's consortia borrowing software migration from III INNReach to OCLC WorldCat Navigator. This effort will migrate the Summit discovery system to the WorldCat.org platform and support streamlining of book and document delivery workflows.

I serve as database manager for the Northwest Digital Archives, a regional archival repository system. In addition to my day-to-day support of the NWDA database and supervising the project's technical assistants, I am an active participant in NWDA groups.

I chair the Libraries' Research Exchange Task Force, which has supported the implementation of WSU Research Exchange, a durable digital repository for content created at Washington State University. Additionally, I provide some support for the Libraries' work in digitizing its unique materials, along with supporting digital projects for faculty members and departments. I provide technical support for some of the Libraries' specialty software including ILLiad, the Uniprint server, & Ariel. This includes performing upgrades – local, server – installations, and assisting with scripting for automated installations/upgrades. I provide technical support for University specialty software such as Advance, Business Objects, Informed Filler, and Outlook 2003. Installing, configuration, and use (especially for Outlook 2003) so I can be most useful to our users.

I write “Technical Notes” – aka Knowledge Base articles – periodically & send out annoucements via email listserver. These illustrated articles are a less expensive form of training for our staff & faculty.

Currently, I continue to have primary responsibility for troubleshooting, repair, maintenance, and purchasing of printers for the entire Libraries. I also purchase, program, and troubleshoot barcode scanners and magnetic stripe readers that are used in various units in particular Access Services.

I recently developed a new SharePoint site to use for the Systems Help Desk. This is a “trouble-ticket” type of format that allows our users to add new and revise their own Help Desk jobs. The site also includes links, knowledge base articles, FAQs, and a Meebo chat box that we monitor weekdays. The Meebo (Virtual Tech Support) is a beta test for the fall 2008 semester.

I have also developed a new CTS Help Desk SharePoint site using the Systems HD as a template. The CTS HD will be deployed very soon. The next SharePoint site that I will develop is the Facilities HD. I hope to complete this project during the fall 2008 semester. The Microsoft product lends itself well to a Help Desk style system by using the Data Views.

I developed and currently maintain the SQL database that contains IP addresses and their locations. I have given the Systems staff read access to the database so they can find unused IP addresses to use in new computers, printers, or servers. This has become a valuable web part in the private Systems Unit SharePoint site.

I am contantly learning new things including Perl, C#, and as much as I can about SharePoint. This is an exciting time in Systems and I am excited to be a part of it. I am also creating small programs that will help me to automate several SQL server processes that I perform routinely.

Developing documentation for all areas I am responsible for as well as for the users of these systems is something I truly enjoy. Educating/training is a part of everyones job in Systems as well. In Systems, we cross-train and serve as backup for each other in specific areas.
