WSU Libraries Mourn Passing of Dr. Larry Stark See also, "Recent Obituaries" from WSU Today Online. | It is with the deepest regret that we inform the WSU community that our dear colleague, Dr. Lawrence Stark, died February 4th at St. Joseph's hospital in Lewiston. His formal appointment in MASC as Assistant University Archivist began in 1985. He was a walking computer on any topic relating to local history, campus history and architecture. |
He delighted in answering questions and always displayed a stunning command of specific details. He helped anyone who asked, from the first semester student to eminent international scholars. He loved his work here. For most of his career, Larry would arrive an hour or more before MASC opened and would always be the last one to close. During Larry's career he oversaw the processing of hundreds of collections and major publication projects such as a statewide census of manuscript repositories and the publication by the WSU Press of several major collection guides including an indexed register for the Regla papers. Indeed, one of his key legacies is that MASC has more processed collections than any of our peers in the Northwest. In recent years, Larry had become extremely adept at transferring WSU football games from film to dvd. Shortly before his recent trip to the hospital he left us a box of 20 football game dvds for us to convert into a new digital collection. Larry's passing leaves a great void in our department, more than any other individual, Larry embodied MASC. He will be sorely missed. His knowledge and dedication will never be replaced. Let us in our own ways wish him well to that place where there is no illness. More details regarding funeral arrangements will be forthcoming.
