BioMed Central Membership

The WSU Libraries has become a Supporter Member of the Open Access Publisher BioMed Central. This membership allows researchers from Washington State University to publish articles that have been accepted by BioMed Central journals, and those of their fledgling sites Chemistry Central and PhysMath Central, at a 15% discount off the Article processing fees. Account number needed for WSU Author submissions is 416318. Additionally, recent articles published in BioMed Central by WSU researchers are prominently listed on the WSU page of the BioMed Central Website

As most of you are well aware the WSU libraries, like academic libraries in many countries, have been forced to cancel access to journals for several decades. The Serials Crisis faced by academic institutions, where subscription prices consistently increase for most scholarly journals and journal packages at rates significantly above the consumer price index. This has left the WSU Libraries with the belief that Washington State University and academic institutions in general need to participate in the development of new financial models to access and distribute the worlds research literature. This membership is one small step in this endeavor.

The WSU Libraries have selected BioMed Central to support at this time because it is a leading Open Access Publisher that has an increasing number of high impact journals and WSU researchers already have been publishing regularly with BioMed Central. There are of course other publishers who follow what has been called an Open Access Gold model of publishing, for example:

Web Version of Scifinder Scholar

The WSU Libraries have added access to the Web Version of Scifinder Scholar. CAS requires each individual to register and create their own login and password. And CAS requires that the link to initiate this registration be in a secure online location. Please see the link below to start the registration process. All WSU faculty, staff and students will be able to register to use this version of Scifinder Scholar. The client version of Scifinder will continue to be supported by CAS and will continue to be available for downloads via the WSU Libraries website. http://content.wsulibs.wsu.edu/scifinder/help/CASwho.html

Once registered, the URL for the web version is: https://scifinder.cas.org. As with most databases, you will be able to this access version off-campus by passing through the libraries' proxy server. Links have been added to the libraries articles indexes page: http://www.systems.wsu.edu/griffin/indexes.htm and have been added to the Griffin catalog.

Please note: Unfortunately, the CAS requires that institutions allocate the number of concurrent users between the web and client versions. I will be monitoring the daily usage reports and turnaway reports provided by CAS to minimize turnaways. WSUs license for 6 concurrent users now needs to be shared between these two versions of Scifinder.

Owen laptops move from two-hour checkout to all-day checkout

The laptops available for checkout at the Owen Science and Engineering Library are moving from two-hour checkout to all-day checkout. Use is still limited to in-library, so all laptops will effectively be due back by close of day each day.

Web of Science backfiles extended from 1990 back to 1980

The Owen Science and Engineering Library, Fischer Agricultural Sciences Library, and the Health Sciences Library have jointly purchased an additional ten-year backfile of the Science Citation Index Expanded portion of Web of Science. WSU now has access to this database back to 1980.

Materials Science Forum: e-access trial

Materials Science Forum, which we get in print, was briefly considered as a cancellation possibility due to limited usage (note that in the end we did decide to renew it this year). To determine the effect of e-access on use, through December 31st we will have electronic access to Materials Science Forum as a trial. Unfortunately, however, as it turns out were unable to link to this e-access in Griffin, the library catalog (as each volume has an individual catalog record wed have to add several hundred links; well do this if we eventually get this permanently, but cant for just a six month trial). However, access to this is IP-based, so you can access Materials Science Forum from their website so long as youre on campus. If you are off campus and want access, it becomes more complex: from the main libraries page, you will have to follow the Article Indexes / EJournals tab, look for the "New E-Resource Trials link near the bottom, and go in through the appropriate link on the page that takes you to. That route will give you a chance to log in as a WSU affiliate and should get you access (this posting has been formatted so that you may still be able to use the direct link above to get access, but you will not otherwise be able to go direct from off campus).

We are asking for your feedback on e-access to this (email Mark O'English at markoe@wsu.edu), and well be gathering stats on use of it until the end of the year. Though there is no cost savings (or increase, for that matter) in moving from print to electronic, there is a downside: if we move to electronic but cancel Materials Science Forum in a future year, the only access well have to the issues from the years we had previously purchased would be through CDs which youd have to come down to the Owen Library to check out or view.

Potential Science/Engineering Journal Cancellations for 2009

Potential Journal Cancellations

The Owen Science and Engineering Library and the Fischer Agricultural Science Library will likely be canceling a number of journals to accommodate continuing and extensive journal price inflation. The Owen and Fischer libraries currently have an estimated cancellation target of $27,218.

Below is a list of titles that are being considered for cancellation. For some of these titles, the libraries will be able to retain online access via consortial agreements or other means - for details, please see our usage data spreadsheet (also linked from the top of the table below). We are asking your input on the titles in this proposed cancellation list. Faculty, staff, and student input is a vital part of these decisions. Please contact your librarian or Joel Cummings by August 15th with your questions, concerns, or comments about any of the titles on this list.

This list was generated by examining a number of data sources. These included WSU's online and print usage data, price and inflation patterns for individual titles, counts of journals cited by WSU authors, counts of papers recently published by WSU authors, past faculty input, and data from ISI's Journal Citation Reports. The total price of all journals listed here is greater than the cancellation target; this will allow the libraries to more easily retain access to journals that you ask us to save.

It is possible that cancellations in the non-science subject areas of the libraries may impact consortial arrangements or package subscriptions which include materials collected by Owen and Fischer. If this happens, this list may require adjustments, and we will keep you informed and involved in these changes.

About the Project Euclid Prime Package

The above list includes the Project Euclid Prime Package, which the libraries have subscribed to since 2005. According to data provided to us by Project Euclid, this package has received very little usage. This is on the preliminary cancellation list, but since this is a large number of individual titles to lose access to (especially during a year where the cancellations are predicted to be relatively small), we would like to leave the possibility open for the math or statistics faculty to consider other uses for these funds. The individual journals collected in this package are listed below; please let Mark O'English or Joel Cummings know if you would like to retain access to any individual titles from this package, access to the whole package, or if you have other requests for these funds, such as new journal titles or moving the funds to monographs (books) or proceedings.

WSU Libraries offering new database packages

As you may know, a number of our journal databases are purchased cooperatively with the other public universities in the state of Washington. This summer we will be migrating from ProQuest and their collection of databases to EBSCO and their offerings. EBSCO gave us access via a free trial during the past year, so many of you will already have become familiar with their products. As of July 1, 2008, we will no longer have access to most of the ProQuest products.

EBSCO full-text databases, including Academic Search Complete, will replace ProQuest 5000 as the interdisciplinary 'first-stop' source for magazines and journals. EBSCO offers 1,500 more current peer reviewed full text titles than ProQuest 5000.

As part of this package, business sources are getting a huge boost with our switch from ProQuests ABI-Inform to EBSCOs Business Source Complete. Business Source Complete covers more than 1,200 journals, with coverage back to 1886 in some cases. The database also features sources such as financial data, investment research reports, industry reports, market research reports, country reports, company profiles, and SWOT analyses.

Coverage of newspapers will be split between some of our current ProQuest products and the well-respected Newsbank product. We will continue to have access to Washington newspapers and selected national papers through ProQuests National Newspapers and Washington Newstand, but we will be gaining about 1,000 current full text newspapers through Newsbanks US and international news collection called Access World News. In addition to the typical search options, the search interface in Access World News offers a geographic search feature, allowing you to click on a map to narrow down your search. This set also includes 17 newspapers from Washington State.

Several products that we license through ProQuest will remain unchanged. These include: Ethnic Newswatch, a collection of English and Spanish language US magazines and newspapers; the Dissertations and Theses database; and the historical New York Times database, which provides complete full-text coverage of the newspaper from 1851 to 2003.

We are working hard to make these changes as seamless as possible for you, and we hope you are pleased with the expanded range of resources that are now available. If you have questions about the new databases with regards to science and/or engineering areas, please contact Joel Cummings.

Libraries at WSU Pullman open for business on Saturday

Effective Saturday February 2nd, all of the WSU Pullman libraries, including the Owen Science and Engineering Library, will be again open on normal schedules. Owen's normal weekend hours are:

Though WSU is closed on Thursday, January 31st as of 10 AM, the Owen Science and Engineering Library will remain open until 5 PM for people needing someplace to go on campus. The Holland and Terrell Libraries are also open until 5 PM, and the Fischer AgSci Library until noon. All other libraries are closed.
