From the Director

It is my pleasure to welcome and introduce Lynn Chmelir, our first Assistant Director for Public and Research Services, who joined the WSU Libraries on February 22. During our Planning Process several years ago, it became apparent that we needed an administrator responsible for coordinating the many service units throughout the WSU Libraries. Lynn will work closely with the service providers in the six Pullman campus libraries, as well as with our branch campus libraries.

Lynn served for 17 years as the College Librarian at Linfield College in McMinnville, OR. In addition to her extensive management experience, she played a major role in the development of ORBIS, the Oregon library consortium. This experience will be especially helpful as the WSU Libraries continue to develop the Cooperative Library Project with our Washington State higher education partners. I know you all will enjoy meeting and working with Lynn Chmelir.

D3 Update: Direct Document Delivery

The Libraries’ direct document delivery program recently underwent some changes. If you are not familiar with it, the direct document delivery program allows faculty and graduate students to order journal articles (not owned by the WSU Libraries) directly from a specific group of suppliers at no charge. The first change is that two of our former suppliers (Ebscodoc and UMI InfoStor) have folded and in their stead, we are introducing Infotrieve. The second change in the program is that we’ve increased the dollar limit allotted per article from $35 to $50. Third, the University of Washington’s very popular "Health Information For You" (HIFY) program, has significantly revised its user documentation. As a result of all these changes, we have updated our direct document delivery handouts, which are available at http://www.wsulibs.wsu.edu/usered/home.htm. For more information about the direct document delivery program, please take a look at the handouts and see if this free service may be of benefit you.

Hear Ye, Hear Ye: UWIN Is Going, Going, Gone On June 30, 1999

All of you for whom UW’s Information Navigator has been a security blanket in accessing Medline and ERIC databases need to begin weaning yourself away from it. After several successful years of operation, UWIN is acknowledging that it is time to take its place in the "Web World." Beginning July 1, 1999, there will be no telnet or WinWillow access to these databases. It is hard to say goodbye to old friends, but there are some good ones waiting in the wings for you. Medline users should go to the National Library of Medicine’s web site at www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/PubMed/index.html. ERIC users can access it via the WSU Libraries Gateway indexes page at http://www.systems.wsu.edu/griffin/INDEXES.htm or direct from the National Library of Education at http://www.accesseric.org:81/.

New Electronic Resources

The WSU Libraries has several new electronic resources available from the "Article Indexes, Full Text and More" section of the WSU Libraries Gateway at http://www.systems.wsu.edu/griffin/wsugate.htm.

Access UN is an index to United Nations publications on all subjects. The file includes publications for the current year and a two year backfile.

The full text of a recent year or two of most American Chemical Society journals and several of their other publications (Directory of Graduate Research, CHEMCYCLOPEDIA Online and LabGuide Online) comes to us via a joint subscription with the other Washington universities and the Evergreen State College. The subscription is funded from money allocated by the Washington legislature to the Cooperative Library Project. The consortial subscription covers 1999, so give this resource a try and let us know if it is worth funding on our own in 2000.

Current Contents is now available via the Web from its producer, the Institute for Scientific Information. Access via UWIN and WinWillow will cease on June 30, 1999 so give this new web-based product a try. In spite of the name of its producer, Current Contents covers all disciplines and is one of the most current indexes to the journal literature.

The International Index to Music Periodicals is a wonderful new resource covering all aspects of the world of music, from the most scholarly studies to the latest crazes. It provides references to articles from 375 international music periodicals from over 20 countries. In addition to music articles there are references to obituaries appearing in the New York Times and the Washington Post. Coverage goes back to 1874 and the index is updated monthly.

Griffin-New Features

Choose the GRIFFIN Catalog from the WSU Libraries Gateway page at http://www.systems.wsu.edu/griffin/wsugate.htm, and you’ll see that you are now able to view YOUR CIRCULATION RECORD. We've added a button (beneath the Course Reserves button) to allow library users to see what items they have checked out and any fines they have accrued with the WSU Libraries. We are working with IT to show only unpaid fines and hope to have this resolved in the Fall 1999. Your Circulation Record will only include items checked out via the automated circulation system.

Do you want to know what the Libraries is acquiring in the way of new materials? Visit our new FEATURED LISTS available under the "What's New" button on the WSU Libraries Gateway (actually, the button itself is new). We now present lists of new materials arranged by broad subject areas based on the Library of Congress classification system. There is also a new book list for ICNE (Intercollegiate Center for Nursing Education) and lists of new print U.S. government documents located in the Holland/New Library and the Owen Science & Engineering Library. There are 31 lists for your perusal. The lists will be updated toward the beginning of each month.
