Most MASC manuscript collections are personal and professional papers of individuals, or records of organizations and business enterprises. These normally consist of unpublished textual documents, and may also include photographs, manuscript music, audio-visual media, printed ephemera, artifacts, and other items. In some cases, "assembled" collections--intentionally gathered material, usually on a particular subject--are also categorized as manuscript collections (for example, the Washington Composers Collection).
These collections have been acquired since the early 1900s, primarily to support research and teaching at Washington State University. They cover a broad range of subjects, and are especially rich in materials relating to the history of eastern Washington State, especially the Palouse region and, more broadly, the Pacific Northwest.
