Conservation and Preservation Internships

The John W. & Mildred Bissinger Endowment allows Manuscripts Archives and Special Collections (MASC) to offer Conservation/Preservation Internships.

The successful candidates will work in the Conservation/Preservation Laboratory in MASC at Washington State University (Pullman, WA) under the supervision of Linnea Nelson, Conservator/Preservation Museum Specialist. The intent is to provide participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to make sound decisions regarding archival mending techniques.

Conservation activities may include:

  • Introduction to Conservation/Bookbinding tools and materials
  • Mending of pamphlet bindings
  • Construction of a variety of protective enclosures
  • Dry-cleaning methods and mending of paper artifacts
  • Various textblock sewing techniques
  • Leather preparation and covering

The internship is offered to a graduate student interested in Conservation/Preservation and who wants to gain a better understanding of the issue through hands-on experience. Candidates must have a 3.5 GPA and submit a resume and essay stating how this internship shall assist in advancing their interest in Conservation/Preservation.

Interested applicants may also review more about the MASC's Conservation and Preservation efforts.
