Records, 1932-1975
The records of the College of Veterinary Medicine were deposited in the Washington State University Library on two occasions. The office files of the dean were received in December 1976 (UA 76-11), while the minutes of staff meetings were deposited in September 1977. Both groups were processed by Pat Graham Pidcock in June 1978.
HISTORICAL SKETCH
Veterinary science has been a part of the curriculum of Washington State University from the institution's beginning in 1890. Within seven years, veterinary science expanded from one course to become a major division: the School of Veterinary Science. Upon completion of a three year program, the first class of Doctors of Veterinary Medicine were graduated in 1902. The school was designated the College of Veterinary Science in 1916, and the program of study was extended to four years. In 1925 the title was altered to the College of Veterinary Medicine. Reorganization in 1945 made the Veterinary College a subdivision of the Institute of Agricultural Sciences, however during the 1960's the College regained its autonomy. Presently the College of Veterinary Medicine is comprised of the departments of (1) Anatomy, Pharmacology/ Toxicology, and Physiology, (2) Clinical Medicine and Surgery, and (3) Microbiology and Pathology as well as five special programs.
A more extensive history of the College, Narrative History of WSU Veterinary College, prepared by Dr. Lavon M. Koger on the occasion of the seventy-fifth anniversary, was published in 1974.
DESCRIPTION AND ARRANGEMENT
The papers of the Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine span the years 1932 through 1975 and are arranged in four series. The first series is a fragment of previous deans' files that date from 1932 until 1962 and consist of alumni correspondence, photos, and reminiscences. The bulk of the collection comprises the second series, most of which was generated during the tenure of Dean Leo Kenneth Busted (b. 1920) from 1973 through 1975 Retaining its original alphabetical order, this second series contains correspondence, memoranda, publications, and reports dealing with curriculum, facilities, industry, medicine, personnel, research, and departmental and university governance.
The third series is minutes of the meetings (1952-1972) of the veterinary school department chairmen; the minutes of the veterinary school faculty (1952-1972) comprise the fourth series. Within the final two series, the folders are ordered chronologically.
