HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

The Library Staff Association (LSA) of Washington State University was organized on 29 November 1946 by G. Donald Smith, Director of Libraries. LSA's stated purpose is "to promote the welfare and mutual understanding of the library staff and to assist in making the library an effective agency for the improvement of the social, cultural and economic life of the college community (from Article II, Sec. 1, of the LSA constitution as amended October 1974). The association is an organizer of staff social functions, an advocate of better working conditions, and the improvement of library services. LSA also publishes its own bulletin, "Open Stacks", and has since 1953.

ARRANGEMENT AND DESCRIPTION

The records of the Library Staff Association are divided into two series: General Records, 1946-1979, and Financial Records, 1954-1967. Series one, General Records, 1946-1979, is an alphabetically arranged subject series which consists of annual reports, correspondence, executive board and general meeting minutes, committee reports, association officer records and reports (president and vice president), and records of the association's secretary. The material in this series dates from 1946 through 1979, but bulks largest in the 1960s and 1970s.

The Second Series, Financial Records, 1954-1967, consists of bank statements, invoices, receipts, cancelled checks, and savings books. The original filing groups have been retained in individual folders and these folders have been arranged chronologically by the earliest material in the folder. These financial records date from 1954 through 1967, but bulk largest in the 1960s.
