FINDING RECORDINGS
WSU Libraries’ Media Materials Services provides a growing collection of CDs, all of which can be found in the Griffin Catalog, and which may be checked out with a WSU ID card. Here are some tools for finding sound recordings in MMS.

The WSU Libraries subscribe to several powerful online music databases delivering classical music, jazz, world music, folk and more, providing thousands of tracks of streaming audio, accessible to anyone with a WSU Network ID:

- Naxos Music Library
- Smithsonian Global Sound
The Kemble Stout Listening Library in Kimbrough Hall has a sizable private collection of sound recordings that are the property of the music department. These recordings do not circulate, but anyone can listen to them on-site. Gradually, this group of recordings is being added to the Griffin Catalog.
FINDING SCORES
Kemble Stout Music Listening LibraryAlthough the Stout Listening Library belongs to the Music Department, this publicly accessible room on the third floor of Kimbrough hall houses music scores that are purchased and owned by the WSU Libraries. Music scores are the only WSU Libraries’ property to be housed outside of official Libraries’ facilities. Scores may be checked out with a WSU ID card.
FINDING BOOKS:
Using the Griffin Catalog, you can search for Books and other printed materials about music in the Holland and Terrell Libraries complex. The Libraries’ music reference collection is on the first floor of Terrell on the shelves alongside the reference desk.
The circulating collection of books about music is found on the second floor of Holland (which is attached to Terrell. There are some older books about music in the basement of Terrell, in compact shelving units 36 and 37. Don’t hesitate to ask for directions if you need help finding what you need.
The Libraries also own several hundred e-books, accessible through the Griffin Catalog.
FINDING PERIODICALS (JOURNALS) AND JOURNAL ARTICLES:
The Libraries subscribe to hundreds of periodicals in print, as well as online through a variety of commercial providers. Starting points for finding online periodical articles include:
- RILM Abstracts of Music Literature, Covers all aspects of music and music-related topics such as acoustics, psychology, sociology, etc. 1967-present.
- International Index to Music Periodicals (IIMP), Indexes articles from 375 international music periodicals from over 20 countries. 1974-present.
- JSTOR, Provides searchable full-text archives for journal issues older than 5 years in a variety of academic disciplines.
- Arts & Humanities Search, Citation Index for humanities and arts journals and resources. Coverage from 1980 to present.
- ProQuest, Includes searchable full-text for newspapers, magazines and some academic journals.

- You can also begin your search for articles through the library gateway page, under Article Indexes/E-Journals.
Recent printed journals and magazines about music are found in the Terrell Library Current Journals room on the ground floor. Older printed journals are bound and placed in the stacks by call number. Use the Griffin Catalog to locate them by title, and ask for help if you need it.
FINDING ONLINE RESOURCES:
Web-Based Subscription Services
Online encyclopedias, indexes to help in locating journal articles, and audio services are all purchased and maintained by the WSU Libraries. They are accessible through “Article Indexes” in the middle of the Libraries’ home page. A selection of some subscription resources for music may also be found here.
Free Web Sites:
Everyone discovers their own favorite web sources for music information. A Google search may yield very useful results. Use critical judgment about the web sites you choose, and use this handout to help you decide: Evaluating Web Sites.
Here’s a tip about searching in Google: Keep phrases in quotation marks, and add extra terms. Examples:

FINDING RARE, COSTLY AND EPHEMERAL MATERIALS
Books before 1800, glorious facsimiles of medieval and renaissance music books, original and facsimile manuscripts, photographs, concert programs, rare recordings and other such resources requiring special protection are located in the Manuscripts, Archives and Special Collections department, on the ground floor of Terrell. Visit the department to see its special music materials.
PEOPLE:
Paula Elliot, Music Librarian Emerita, retired in December 2007. Research assistance in music is available at the Humanities/Social Sciences reference desk. The Hum/Soc Collections Manager is Lou Vyhnanek. We rely on many staff in the WSU Libraries to assist in the acquisition, preparation and maintenance of music collections.
William Payne, Library Specialist for the music department collections, is located in the Kemble Stout Listening Library in Kimbrough hall. Several music students assist Dr. Payne.
