    FINDING RECORDINGS

WSU Libraries’ Media Materials Services provides a growing collection of CDs, all of which can be found in the Griffin Catalog, and which may be checked out with a WSU ID card. Here are some tools for finding sound recordings in MMS.

The WSU Libraries subscribe to several powerful online music databases delivering classical music, jazz, world music, folk and more, providing thousands of tracks of streaming audio, accessible to anyone with a WSU Network ID:

The Kemble Stout Listening Library in Kimbrough Hall has a sizable private collection of sound recordings that are the property of the music department. These recordings do not circulate, but anyone can listen to them on-site. Gradually, this group of recordings is being added to the Griffin Catalog.

    FINDING ONLINE RESOURCES:

    Web-Based Subscription Services
Online encyclopedias, indexes to help in locating journal articles, and audio services are all purchased and maintained by the WSU Libraries. They are accessible through “Article Indexes” in the middle of the Libraries’ home page. A selection of some subscription resources for music may also be found here.

    Free Web Sites:
Everyone discovers their own favorite web sources for music information. A Google search may yield very useful results. Use critical judgment about the web sites you choose, and use this handout to help you decide: Evaluating Web Sites.
Here’s a tip about searching in Google: Keep phrases in quotation marks, and add extra terms. Examples:
    Mimi “La Boheme”
    “Bob Dylan” movies
