Student Competition on Relevant Engineering
Records, 1973-1977
The records of the Student Competition on Relevant Engineering were transferred to the University Archives, Washington State University, in October 1978 (UA 78-36). The collection was processed by Andrew J. Gregg in May 1981.
HISTORICAL SKETCH
The student Competition on Relevant Engineering (SCORE) was established in 1971 by engineers in colleges and universities to sponsor national intercollegiate engineering design/hardware fabrication competitions. SCORE grew out of the Clear Air Car Race of 1970 which was one of the first project-oriented approaches to engineering. Two subsequent competitions sponsored by SCORE were Students against Fires (1973-1975), and the 1976-1977 Energy Resource Alternatives (ERA I and ERA II). Washington State University first participated in a SCORE competition during the 1973-1974 school year. The Department of Mechanical Engineering sponsored a team of students who took part in the Students Against Fires competition. During the next few years, Washington State University became much more active in the organization and hosted the 1977 Summer Symposium at Richland, Washington. SCORE's membership is international in nature, and it extends invitations to qualified high school groups to participate in the competitions.
ARRANGEMENT AND DESCRIPTION
This collection is arranged in two series. The first series deals with the Washington State University Mechanical Engineering Department's role in the 1973-1974 Students Against Fires competition. These materials contain the papers of the WSU department which pertain to the competition, and a final report published by SCORE.
The second series deals with the Energy Resource Alternatives-II competition sponsored by the WSU Department of Mechanical Engineering- This series contains reports, photographs, publication notebooks, student project data, student project evaluation forms, routes to Richland, Washington, and phone numbers and addresses of participants and others connected with the ERA-II competition. The majority of the material comes from the years 1975-1977. The series is arranged alphabetically by subject.
