ORGANIZATIONAL SKETCH

The Office of International Programs administers and coordinates international programs undertaken by the university to strengthen its role in international affairs. Its functions may generally be described as follows:

Development and administration of overseas projects; administration of International Exchange Awards; administering student educational exchanges between Washington State University and foreign universities; acting as a clearinghouse for interested WSU staff and students on matters relating to study and teaching abroad, including student and faculty Fulbright awards and Peace Corps liaison. The office works with and administers programs of foreign student sponsoring agencies such as African-American Institute (AAI), Latin American Scholarship Program of American Universities (LASPAU), Institute of International Education (IIE), Agency for International Development (AID), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), and Food and Agriculture Organization of the U.N. (FAO).

In addition, Washington State University offers exchange programs with University College, Cardiff, Wales; Friedrich Wilhelms University, Bonn, Germany; University of Lund, Sweden; Nihon University, Tokyo, Japan; and Tamkang College in Taiwan. In addition, the university offers study abroad programs at the University of Sterling, Scotland; and the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. Students majoring in foreign languages may select a program of study in Rennes or Seville through the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE). Washington State University is also a member of the Northwest Interinstitutional Council for Study Abroad (NICSA), a consortium which offers programs in London, Avignon, and Cologne. ARRANGEMENT & DESCRIPTION

The records of the Office of International Programs, 1959-1975, are arranged in two series. Series one, Office Files and Domestic Correspondence is comprised of program and course information, minutes and memoranda, and staff and student data. Included also is considerable correspondence between the Washington State University Office of International Programs and cooperating student exchange organizations: (1) American Heritage Association, (2) Council of International Education Exchange, (3) Northwest Interinstitutional Education Exchange, (3) Northwest Interinstitutional Council on Study Abroad.

Series two, Foreign Correspondence, is comprised of communications of university officials, foreign students anticipating or participating in W.S.U. studies, and W.S.U. students enrolled at foreign universities. Correspondence includes formal letters, personal notes, telegrams, and memos which deal with such subjects as entrance requirements, travel and living arrangements, and scholastic progress. Within each series the folders are arranged alphabetically by topic.
