Cooperative Extension Service
Policy Records, 1961-1991

Records of the Cooperative Extension Service were transferred to the Washington State University Libraries in 1987 (Accession Number US87-06) and 1989 (Accession Number UA89-35). The papers were processed by James A. Nazzal, June 2000.

ORGANIZATIONAL HISTORY

Cooperative Extension in Washington began in 1915, initially known as Agricultural Extension. It is an effort of the federal Department of Agriculture, Washington State University, and the county governments that participate, which is that of most counties.

The activities of the Extension Service are documented copiously until about 1970, after which the documentation is more sparse and in the form of statements of objectives and summary reports of activities.

Other Extension Service records are maintained at the University Archives. More significant bodies of records are Archives 87 and Archives 189. Researchers may wish to consult various lists and catalogs at the Archives, as this list is not exhaustive.

ARRANGEMENT AND DESCRIPTION

The records of the Cooperative Extension Service consist of reports, publications, directors' memoranda, plans, and guideline documents. These records appear to have been selected by the Cooperative Extension staff as documents that stated or were illustrative of general policies, mission and goals for the Service, chiefly in the years from about 1978 to about 1989.

The records are arranged in no particular order, save that related materials are grouped.
