ORGANIZATIONAL HISTORY

The [Intercollegiate] Association of Women Students (AWS) was established at Washington State University in 1912. The AWS provides a channel of communication through which pertinent problems affecting women students can be brought to local and national attention. Activities of the AWS promote higher education for women and attempt to gain a better understanding of women's roles in society. At the present time the AWS is an independent student organization funded by WSU service and activity fees.

Numerous committees of the AWS are responsible for a variety of issues and activities. Each committee consists of a chairman and committee members who are selected through interviews conducted by the standing Personnel Committee. Any woman is eligible to serve on an AWS committee.

ARRANGEMENT AND DESCRIPTION

The records of the Association of Women Students (AWS) are arranged alphabetically as a single series. This collection consists of the records of several AWS committees for the years 1954 through 1970.
