The Chalcraft-Pickering Photograph Collection was separated
from the Edwin L. Chalcraft papers (Cage 560), which were processed
in 1988. Biographical information about Edwin L. Chalcraft and
William Pickering, Governor of Washington Territory from 1862-1866,
can be found in the finding aid to those papers. Briefly, Edwin
L. Chalcraft superintended the Indian Training School at Chemawa,
near Salem, Oregon, in 1894-95, and again from 1904-1911. It was
during this time that the lantern slides were made.
The photo collection was processed by Carol Lichtenberg in
September, 1990.
The collection consists of 105 family portraits of various
sizes, depicting Edwin L. Chalcraft, his wife, Alice Fawcett (Pickering)
Chalcraft, their children, Edwin Pickering Chalcraft and Alice
Pickering Chalcraft, as well as sundry relatives. There is also
a portrait of William Pickering, Governor of Washington Territory
from 1862-1866. He was the grandfather of Alice Fawcett Chalcraft.
These portraits are contained in one box of twenty folders, in
a rough chronological sequence of familial groupings.
The more substantial and historically significant part of the
collection consists of three boxes of glass lantern slides, assumed
to be the work of Edwin L. Chalcraft, and bearing his descriptive
notes along the bindings and students at Chemawa, the Indian Training
School near Salem, Oregon. Included are classroom scenes, sports,
music, and work activities of the students, and scenes from a
Chatauqua held at Oregon City, Oregon.
