Leonard and Virginia Woolf
Insert Papers, ca. 1875-1974
This collection of laid in inserts from books that were originally part of the personal library of Leonard and Virginia Woolf (including those books housed in their Monks House and Victoria Square residences in England) became available for purchase shortly after Leonard Woolf's death in 1969. In the ensuing years additional titles from Leonard Woolf's estate surfaced. These were also purchased in whole or in part by the Washington State University Libraries. In 1974 the Libraries purchased a collateral lot of Hogarth Press editions, some from the Woolfs' own collection. The bulk of what now constitutes the Libraries' printed Woolf holdings (and collateral print collections) was purchased in six lots between 1971 and 1983. Robert N. Matuozzi arranged and cataloged this collection of loose insert items in March of 2000.

Arrangement and Description
The laid in Insert Papers collection from the personal library of Leonard and Virginia Woolf consists of manuscripts, letters, and miscellaneous material that, for a variety of reasons, were placed by Leonard and Virginia Woolf in books from their working library. Other casual inserts were slipped into titles that had been sent to them as review copies or as gifts. Most of this insert material, then, has some relationship to the title it was originally associated with although the precise nature of a given item or item-book association is not always clear. Of special interest among the manuscripts are the literary and scholarly fragments, some with definite authorship. Published (printed) insert material was left in the books. The collection is organized chronologically into two series: Series 1, Correspondence, 1909-1974, n.d. and Series 2, Manuscripts, 1875-1938, n.d. This arrangement has been imposed by the archivist.
Where possible, items are minimally described according to elements selected from the information present on documents or that was established by previous research; bracketed information is supplied. The electronic version of this finding aid offers direct World Wide Web links to selected bibliographic records for those copies of books from which a given insert was removed. These records may contain additional information about these items.
