Fred Roy Yoder
Papers, ca. 1890 - ca. 1980
Papers of Fred Roy Yoder were acquired by the Washington State University Libraries in December 1982 by donation of Mr. Yoder's daughter, Elaine Zakiarison of Washington, DC. (Accession MS92-77). The papers were processed by Steve Rasmussen between March and August, 1994.
BIOGRAPHY
Fred Roy Yoder was born in 1888 in North Carolina. He was educated in various places, including Lenoir-Rhyne College in North Carolina, the University of North Carolina, the University of Missouri, the University of London, and the University of Wisconsin. He was hired by the State College of Washington in 1920 where he taught until his retirement in 1954. After his retirement from Washington State University, he spent a number of years at Western Kentucky State College and Campbellsville College. As a professor of sociology, he headed the Department of Sociology from 1928 to 1947, overseeing a great deal of growth. Additionally he did considerable writing including many articles, and two textbooks, Introduction to Agricultural Economics, and Introduction to Sociology. Yoder was very interested in political biography, and undertook several projects including biography of John R. Rogers, Robert M. LaFollette, and Marion Butler. He gathered much information on these subjects, but never completed any of the three projects. Yoder was active in many community organizations, including Kiwanis, American Legion, Moose Lodge, Chamber of Commerce, and the local Democratic Party. He ran for Congress in 1944 and 1954, losing both times.
ARRANGEMENT AND DESCRIPTION
The papers of Fred R. Yoder are chiefly comprised of research notes, copied documents and related correspondence, all concerning uncompleted research projects, principally three political biographies: Washington governor John R. Rogers, North Carolina Senator Marion Butler, and Wisconsin Senator Robert M. LaFollette. The papers also include records associated with Yoder's work as a teacher of sociology, and some personal papers. The papers are arranged in five series: Governor John Rankin Rogers, Senator Robert M. LaFollette, Senator Marion Butler, teaching, and miscellaneous subject files. The arrangement follows original order established by Yoder. This informal filing occasionally leaves the order of the material within each series confusing.
