Robert L. Picken
Papers, 1904-1974
On 20 August, 1985, Nellie B. Picken of Spokane donated her father's papers to the Washington State University Libraries. The papers were processed in February, 1986, by Harvey Young.
BIOGRAPHY
In 1904, Robert L. "Bob" Picken came to the Okanogan region from Iowa. He established a cattle ranch and during his long career served Washington State and the cattle industry in various capacities, including representative of the Okanogan County Livestock Association, the Washington Cattlemen's Association, Washington State Senator, and Washington representative to the United States Senate hearings on Public Land Policy, 1947. Picken frequently drew on his long experience as a cattleman to give talks on methods of range management.
ARRANGEMENT AND DESCRIPTION
Robert Picken's papers consist of a variety of documents dealing primarily with the cattle business and the related topic of range management in the Okanogan area. The papers deal with Picken's activities in the Washington State Cattlemen's Association and as Washington representative to United States hearings on public land policy. Other papers deal with grazing regulations, the office of price stabilization retailing beef, and creating a Washington Department of National Resources. The papers are arranged in a single alphabetical series of folders reflecting the order in which the papers were received by the WSU Libraries.
