ORGANIZATIONAL HISTORY

In 1973 Washington farm women formed the Washington Women for the Survival of Agriculture, a component of the national "American Agri-Women, Incorporated." This organization seeks to develop communication among farm and ranch women throughout the nation. The primary purpose of WWSA is to educate the public and to inform policymakers regarding the vital issues that concern farmers.

In 1977-1978 Janet Allison served as President. During this time the WWSA discussed and advocated positions on such issues as the Family Farm Water Act, the Water Pollution control Act, and the proposal to establish an Agricultural Labor Relations Board. WWSA has over 300 members representing all major commodity groups, including the state Dairy Wives and Cowbelles. It is not affiliated with the Farm Bureau, Grange, or any other farm organization, but it does work with all interested groups. The WWSA is patterned after womens' agricultural groups in Michigan and New York. As Mrs. Janet Allison describes it, "We represent the family in agriculture."

ARRANGEMENT AND DESCRIPTION

The records of Washington Women for the Survival of Agriculture consist of documents describing the position and actions of the organization on such vital issues of agriculture as state and national water use policy, collective bargaining and farm-labor relations, illegal aliens, and land use. Many of the letters illustrate the efforts of the group to educate the public and government regarding farmers' views on these and other issues. The collection is arranged alphabetically and covers the years 1973-1980.
