ORGANIZATIONAL HISTORY

The Pullman Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) was organized in December 1917 as a branch of the Association of Collegiate Alumnae which merged in April 1921 with the Southern Association of Collegiate Women to form the AAUW. On January 27, 1927 the Washington branches, including Pullman, met at a convention in Longview and voted to establish the Washington State Division of the AAUW. Through this division the Pullman Branch participated in international, national, and regional projects. One of these projects is the Million Dollar Fellowship, established in 1927, which encourages higher education for women throughout the world, This fellowship prompted the establishment of the Washington State fellowship fund, the Margaret C. Snell Fellowship, in October 1933.

The Pullman Branch hosted the Washington State AAUW Convention in 1967 in honor of the branch's fiftieth anniversary and its members' active support in promoting better opportunities for women through higher education, improved education at all levels, and the betterment of the American and world communities, Toward these ends the Pullman Branch formed or supported literature groups, the Library Gift Fund, the Reading is FUN-damental Program, money drives for UNICEF, a Status of Women Committee, and Global Interdependence Study Groups.

ARRANGEMENT AND DESCRIPTION

The organizational records of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), Pullman Branch, are arranged alphabetically by topic and chronologically within topics as per their original order. The bulk of the records center on the 1960's and pertain mainly to the educational commitments of the organization, particularly the development and continued support of fellowship funds for women, including the national AAUW Million Dollar Fellowship Fund, and the Washington State Margaret C. In addition to these concerns the records describe the organization's interests in the status of women, the environment, Washington State's tax structure, social security for the elderly and disabled, and community projects. The records contain: branch budgets from 1951 to 1970; treasurer records from 1962 to 1968; budgets for the Library Gift Fund from 1960 to 1964; reports for the Rental Sales Gallery from 1966 to 1967; the records for UNICEF money drives from 1954 to 1969; and committee and officers' reports from 1951 to 1970. Principal correspondents include: Mrs. Henry Grosshams, Pullman Branch President, 1966-1968; Mrs. Helen Austin, Pullman Branch President, 1969-1970; Ms. Ruth McDonald, First Vice President, 1969, and Pullman Branch President, 1970-1972; and Dr. Pauline Tompkins, National AAUW General Director, 1966-1968.
