He graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in law in 1934 and was admitted to the Washington Bar and established a private practice in 1935. Hunter served as Justice of the Peace in Grand Coulee from 1936 to 1946. He became Superior Court Judge for Grant and Douglas counties in 1946 and served in that capacity until 1957. In 1957 he was appointed to the Washington State Supreme Court, a position he retained through subsequent elections until his retirement in 1977. Hunter served as Chief Justice of the Court from 1969 to 1970.
ARRANGEMENT AND DESCRIPTION
The Robert T. Hunter papers include correspondence, memoranda, reports, agendas, minutes, judicial conference material and committee notes. The papers are arranged in five series: Washington State Judicial Council, Bench-Bar-Press Committee, Revision of the Judicial Article of the State Constitution, Judicial Conference, and some miscellaneous papers. The Judicial Council series concerns the activities of the Washington State Judicial Council during the period 1967 through 1970. This material includes correspondence, memoranda, reports, agendas (1969-1970), minutes and some exhibits. The correspondence subseries is arranged chronologically by year, as are the agendas for the council meetings. The Bench-Bar-Press Committee material consists primarily of correspondence and memoranda arranged in yearly chronological order during the period 1969-1970. The series on the revision of the Judicial Article for the Washington State Constitution includes correspondence, memoranda, reports, proposed revisions of the judicial article, proposed legislation and journal articles. This material covers the period from 1967 through 1970. The series on judicial conferences, 1966 through 1970, includes agendas, correspondence, reports, memoranda, papers presented at various conferences as well as proposed judicial legislation. The miscellaneous series consists of correspondence, memoranda, reports, personal resumes, financial material, contracts for publishing Supreme Court decisions, affidavits, proposed legislation and court rules. In this series, the folders have been arranged chronologically from 1959 to 1976; but, maintaining the original order, the papers within a folder have not been rearranged in chronological order.
Although the collection covers the period from 1959 through 1976, the bulk of the material is from the period 1967 through 1970. The original order has been maintained throughout the collection where possible, primarily in the first four series.
The principal correspondents throughout the papers are: Albert C. Bise, Supreme Court Administrator; William M. Lowry, Clerk of the Supreme Court; Luvern V. Rieke, executive secretary of the Washington Judicial Council and Professor of Law at the university of Washington; Hu Blonk, managing editor of the Wenatchee Daily World; and Robert C. Finley, Justice of the Washington State Supreme Court.
