Tri-County Jersey Cattle Club
Records, 1948-1976
The records of the Tri-County Jersey Cattle Club were donated to the Washington State University Library by Mr. George Huffman of Deer Park, former Secretary-Treasurer, through Ms. Donna Jean Simpson, also of Deer Park. The records were arranged and processed in January, 1978 by Catherine Feher.
HISTORICAL SKETCH
In 1948 five dairymen from the Deer Park, Washington area pooled their resources and bought a Jersey bull for collective use. During the same year, the group decided to form a social club for local Jersey farmers and their families. This club was originally called the Deer Park Jersey Cattle Club. It quickly evolved into a non-profit social/ agricultural organization for the collective benefit of Jersey dairymen in the area.
In 1950, the Deer Park Jersey Cattle Club became affiliated with the Inland Empire Jersey Cattle Club. That same year, they also became affiliated with the Washington State Jersey Cattle Club, and the three groups decided to hold a state-wide sale of Jersey cows at Deer Park in August, 1951. Affiliation continued with the Washington State Jersey Cattle Club and in 1952, another state-wide Jersey Cattle Sale was held at Deer Park. Evidently, it became an annual event.
In 1958, the Deer Park Jersey Cattle Club changed its name to the Tri-County Jersey Cattle Club and gained a regional membership. It received articles of incorporation as a domestic corporation, remaining a non-profit organization for the benefit of its members. The purpose of the club was to promote the breeding, improvement, advertising, showing, sale and exchange of Jersey cattle, and the promotion of dairy products in general. The club continued until 1976, when it apparently disbanded.
