Using Search Engines to Detect Plagiarism

You can use Web search engines such as Google, HotBot and AltaVista to see if exerpts from a suspicious paper can be found on the web by using a search statement enclosed in quotation marks. Be sure to use a distinctive string of words to increase the specificity of your results. You can find more strategies for this at the Detecting Plagiarism on Web Pages page from the University of Washington's TRIO project (the same strategies for detecting plagiarism on webpages can be used for detecting plagiarism on term papers, etc.).
