Holland/New Library exhibit case

"Siete Leguas". Poster
The exhibit features both the Semana de La Raza poster that includes the calendar of events for the week of Feb. 28-March 3 and several pieces of artwork by the nationally acclaimed artist Alfredo Arreguín.
Arreguín will visit the Pullman campus to present a slideshow of his artwork from 6-7pm on Thursday, March 2 at the Fine Arts Center Auditorium. Arreguín was born in 1935 in Morelia, Michoácan, Mexico. As a young man he moved to Mexico City and immigrated to the U.S. in 1959 and settled in Seattle. Although his father encouraged him to become an architect, he pursued an artistic course of study and graduated with an MFA from the University of Washington. He is the recipient of the Governor's Arts Award and numerous recognitions for his contributions to the Latino community.

Arreguín works in patterned and layered oil paint, capturing images from the lush tropical jungle, religious subjects, and portraits of famous people like human rights activist Cesar Chavez and artist Frida Kahlo. His palette consists of rich hues, cool blues, warm reds and oranges which overlay intricate grid patterns. The beautiful patterns evoke a meditated connection between the magic and history of the south and the realities of the north.

Thanks to Francisco Tamayo and Leo Pangelinan at the Chicano(a)/Latino(a) Student Center for arranging to present this exhibit.

Permission was granted by Alfredo Arreguín to photograph his artwork for publication on the Libraries' exhibits homepage.
