Finding Reference Tools

There are several ways of accessing online reference tools from the WSU Libraries:

Online Reference Resources

Increasingly, reference tools are available to WSU students via the Internet. To be thorough, you may still wish to consult paper resources. Here are some relatively simple ways to access reference tools online via the WSU Libraries:

Some of your options:

1) One place to find great reference resources is within the Oxford Online Collection. These reference resources can be found under the Article Indexes tab off the WSU Library Homepage. Just look under the letter “O” in the A-Z listing and scroll to find the Oxfords.

Fall 2009: Our collection of online encyclopedias have greatly increased to include:

Thirty online encyclopedias published by Sage
(a major publisher in the areas of the Social Sciences).
In Griffin, do a keyword search on: sage encyclopedia
Limit by E-Resources (pull-down menu).

Over forty online encyclopedias published by Gale. In Griffin, do a keyword search on: gale virtual reference

2) You might find it easiest to use Griffin Catalog – you can limit your search to Reference Resources by going to the Advanced Search screen and then limiting your search by using the second pull-down menu and changing “View Entire Collection ” to "E-Books." Then simply conduct a keyword search combining your topic with the word “encyclopedia” or “dictionary.” For example you might search for “autism and encyclopedia.

3)
Search NetLibrary. Conduct title searches on your topic and one of the reference tool types we've learned. Before beginning your search, establish a "free account" with NetLibrary. This will allow you to "check out" the electronic books, and view them extensively.

NETLIBRARY INSTRUCTIONS

Keep in mind that NetLibrary contain many other books which are not specifically reference books.

These, of course, may be also very valuable to your research.
A general search on your topic in NetLibrary may yield many useful resources.

If you'd like to learn more about using NetLibrary, take a look at the NetLibrary tutorial!
1. To "Create a Free Account", find the link at the top right-hand corner of the NetLibrary homepage, and follow the simple directions this link provides you:

2. Conduct a TITLE search based on the following examples:

For example, in NetLibrary try searches similar to these:

literature AND dictionary

development
AND encyclopedia

culture
AND encyclopedia

theories
AND encyclopedia

food AND dictionary

handbook
AND behavior

Print Reference Resources

Use a Griffin keyword search to identify printed reference resources. You may then request photocopies of pages from these books delivered to your home or desktop via ILLiad.

atlas AND economic
atlas AND ethnic
dictionary AND social work
dictionary AND learning disabilities

encyclopedia AND divorce
encyclopedia AND child abuse
encyclopedia AND victorian
encyclopedia AND insects
encyclopedia AND social sciences

Or you can identify sources from these .pdf handouts:

Subject Guides

Because reference books do not check out, you will need to enlist the help of a librarian to identify the pages from these books which will be most useful to you.
