People are standing in line to receive federal food surpluses distributed by the Cuyahoga County Welfare Department in Cleveland, Ohio, on May 13, 1959. The food being distributed included corn meal, butter, flour, rice and dried milk. It was the first such distribution in the county of 1,700, 000 persons since the depression of the 1930s. Poor relief rolls now are near a recession peak of 6,600 cases. (AP Photo)

In the pre-TV era, people saw the news every week in their neighborhood movie theaters. Newsreels were shown before every feature film and in dedicated newsreel theaters located in large cities. Universal Newsreel, produced from 1929 to 1967, was released twice a week.
