The library is named for George B. Brain, Dean of the Washington State University College of Education from 1965-1983. Dr. Brain received his M.A. in Education from Central Washington State College (1950), and his Ph.D. from Columbia University (1957). His long career in education included work as an elementary school teacher and principal, and terms as the superintendent of schools in Bellevue, Washington (1953-59), and Baltimore, Maryland (1960-64). He currently lives in Ellensburg, Washington.
The Education Library was re-dedicated and named for Dr. Brain in July 1987.

The George B. Brain Education Library houses a collection that reflects faculty and
student interests in elementary and secondary education, counseling and educational
psychology, educational administration, adult education, and the education of
special (bilingual, multicultural, gifted and disabled) populations. Special resources
include juvenile literature, K-12 textbooks, educational kits, curriculum guides,
and an ERIC microfiche collection. The library currently holds over 60,000
volumes, and maintains current subscriptions to approximately 250 core journals
in the field of education. The library also holds copies of all WSU theses
and dissertations in the field of education
