Collection Development Policies:

Foreign Languages and Literatures: World

(See specific: English and American, Spanish, French, German, Slavic, Asian, Latin, Italian and Classical Greek)

Purpose: To support general undergraduate education. Material will be of special interest to the following departments and programs: Foreign Languages and Literatures, Comparative Ethnic Studies, History, English, Theater, Philosophy, Anthropology, Honors Program, General Education (World Civilizations), and Political Science. Literatures other than those mentioned above under Exclusions are taught only occasionally, and only at the undergraduate level.

General Collection Guidelines:
  1. Languages: The primary language of the collection is English. Major literary works are purchased very selectively in the original language. Critical studies of the various literatures are usually acquired in English.
  2. Chronological Guidelines: No time period is excluded.
  3. Geographical Guidelines: No geographical exclusions.
  4. Treatment of Subject: Literary texts and critical, theoretical and historical studies of literature are acquired.
  5. Types of Materials: Monographs and serials form the basis of the collection, but literary encyclopedias, dictionaries, proceedings of relevant conferences, congresses, and institutes are also acquired. Rare books or manuscripts are not acquired except as microform or facsimile reprint collections. Textbooks are not ordinarily acquired. Electronic resources are acquired.
  6. Date of Publication: Emphasis is on the acquisition of current imprints. Retrospective purchasing may be done on a limited basis, with reprints, facsimiles, and microforms preferred to expensive or hard-to-locate original imprints.
