I work as part of the WSU Libraries' cataloging team. All the people in this unit work extremely well together to provide the best service possible. My primary focus is cataloging a variety of non-print material and the more complex cataloging for the Urban Libraries and Departmental Libraries, etc. I do a wide variety of cataloging which may include the simplest ones with full Library of Congress records to doing original descriptive and subject cataloging for print and non-print materials. I catalog DVDs, CD-ROMs, the books with any type of disc, kits, textbooks, some microforms, non-Pullman theses as well as the occasional 12” laser disc or LP records. Providing back-up as needed for other specific areas is also part of my responsibilities. I process replacement copies received from Access Services and resolve various problems as found, given to me or assigned from the HelpDesk, as well as make serial decisions for new and gift material. I am involved in some staff training and revision of their work. Currently, I am serving on the Health & Safety Working Group.Jane Bragg

The Marking unit is managed jointly by Michelle Green, Kris Davis, and myself. We work closely with the rest of the Bibliographic Control staff, Binding, Serials, and Acquisitions, and also have frequent interactions with the public service units. I'm primarily responsible for administrative functions in the unit, such as hiring and training the students, budgeting, managing timecards, and assigning work to temporary employees that falls outside the normal Marking processing activities. I compile the annual statistics for the unit, and do problem solving. The Marking unit also manages the compact storage areas. I'm accountable for concerns about processing priorities, procedures, and quality control. Some of my time is spent resolving or routing problems that are referred by other areas, or that are noticed while doing database maintenance activities. This includes discrepancies between Griffin records and books in hand, including bibliographic data such as authors, titles, and publication dates; call numbers and volume information; locations; barcode numbers; circulation loan periods, etc. I process the duplicate barcode and bibliographic record list run weekly in Griffin, and also handle duplicate call number problems.
Along with several other staff, I update bibliographic and item records in Griffin and perform the associated OCLC operations for such maintenance activities as reinstating materials, updating call numbers, transferring and recataloging materials. I continue to work with the monographic retrospective projects, and several other special projects; books with on-the-fly Griffin records are sent to me. I do cataloging of monographic state depository material, relying heavily on the help provided by Helen Thomas and other staff for foreign language and non-print materials.

My position is split between Acquisitions and Cataloging. For my half in Cataloging I mainly do special projects, including retrospective conversion and cataloging of Rand materials. I am also the backup person for Marking. I am currently working on re-classing the Dewey theses and searching TSD microfilm on OCLC to attach holdings. I also do database maintenance work on transfers, remarks, call # changes, compact storage, etc. Mail distribution for cataloging or the whole CTS floor (WSU week) is also one of my responsibilities. I also assist with checking statistics as well as anything else needed.Janet Feldner

I coordinate the processing of the U.S. Depository materials. Personally this includes maintaining the item selection database (Do not worry, Collection Development folk make the decisions, I just record them.), processing the paper and CD type monographs, processing some electronic monographs, processing.electronic serials—including loading the new ones into ERM, any DBM work needed, and whatever else comes up. I work with others in the unit to pre-process the depository boxes, process the microfiche monographs, and process the electronic monographs. In addition I also work on special projects, problem solving and even some documents recon as well as serving on GIWG.For non-documents I work on serials cataloging and do added volumes for the regional campuses and departmental libraries.

I oversee the work of student employees in the marking unit. I assign jobs such as label printing, marking of new book and media materials. Processing of thesis; stack, archive and microfilm. Remarking of books already in the system. Barcoding and processing of books sent from the bindery, both mono's and serials as well as music binds. I am the final check on materials before routing to departments and other libraries. I route materials to the binding department and maintain files on items routed. I print replacement barcodes. I am responsible for ordering supplies for the department. When time permits I work on the retrospective conversion project.Suzanne James-Bacon

All new books from Acquisitions come to me. I catalog the ones I can and pass on those I can't to the appropriate person. I am responsible for the withdrawal of monographs from all campuses except Vancouver. And I work on a variety of projects, usually database clean-up types, as needed.Doug Lambeth

I am responsible for cataloging printed material, videos, and electronic resources. Special cataloging projects are always appearing, such as 16MM films, gift items, and endless electronic issues. As the nature of the library changes with each new technological advance, my duties are constantly in flux. As a unit, the staff of Bibliographic Control works closely together. Much of our work is rather like an assembly line: items are passed between us and we each perform various parts of the cataloging process.Kris McBride

Most of my time is spent searching Griffin, Worldcat and Connexion for monograph titles. I catalog Pullman, Tri-Cities, Spokane and some Vancouver gifts, making bibliographic changes as necessary. I also catalog added volumes, adding new content to open entry catalog records in Griffin. I also spend several hours a week updating monographs on the internet titles list from GPO. This includes checking item in Griffin or Connexion and updating item record and adding a PURL if necessary. Other projects: searching databases for old gifts and the RASC collection from Tri-cities, and adding cutter numbers to the physical education microfiche.Helen Thomas

I am responsible for cataloging music scores and recordings, juvenile materials, & Cyrillic materials. In addition to lots of copy cataloging with extensive revision, I do a fair amount of original cataloging. I am currently working on a project to put all of the Music Library's large collection of sound recordings into Griffin. From 2006-2009 I am serving on the Cataloging Advisory Working Group. I am always willing and happy to help other cataloging staff with questions regarding cataloging rules and how-to's. For variety, I write macros in OCLC Connexion to improve cataloging speed and accuracy.Sylvia Thompson

I am a member of the WSU Libraries' cataloging team. My primary focus is on cataloging serials in all formats (i.e. paper, microfiche, microfilm, electronic, etc…) I do the descriptive cataloging, including original cataloging, and request subjects and/or call numbers from Janet Feldner or Greg Matthews if needed. I like serials because they can be a challenge, and I find it rewarding to solve a complex title change, which is like solving a puzzle. I also work on special projects, such as merging micro and paper serial cataloging records, and the WLN control number project, for example. I assist Janet Feldner with U.S. Government Documents, which currently includes helping with the processing of the depository boxes and cataloging some of the monographic microfiche. I also do descriptive cataloging on almost all the thesis (except for what Judi Beeson catalogs), both in paper and electronic formats. I really enjoy my job and the people I work with.
