FROM TEACHER TO HIGH SCHOOL LIBRARIAN TO WSU LIBRARIES

Audrey Wilson is a familiar face to most people at the library since she has worked within TSD for 12 years. However, her library career did not begin here. In the 1970s, before there were any computers, she worked for the Education Library here on campus. She remembers doing everything manually: updating the card catalog, manually checking-out items, typing reserves, etc. And before that, she taught Home Economics ("Home and Family Life") for several years at Toledo High School, Washington, after which she transferred to the role of School Librarian.

For the last five or six years, however, Audrey's role has been to order books and co-ordinate book approvals, with her official position title being the Monographic Orders/Book Approval Coordinator. She spends most of her time processing paper requests for books and monographs, overseeing the book approval shelves, and maintaining the catalog record to ensure no duplicates exist.

LONG INVOLVEMENT WITH THE GIRL SCOUTS

Audrey enjoys small town life. She grew up in Washtucna WA, where she knew (and still knows!) most of the residents. After spending time in Spokane (where she attended Whitworth College), Idaho Falls ID, Minden NV, Toledo WA, Pullman WA (where she got her undergraduate degree in Education), and Ellensburg WA (where she got a minor in Library Science), she and her family returned to eastern Washington. Audrey describes the Palouse as being a "soft environment" which she likes for its openness, and both she and her husband, Dennis, are content to stay here. However, when asked if she would change anything, Audrey admits to wishing she had done more widespread travelling.

One of her daughters, Vicki, 16, is fulfilling this travel wish for Audrey. She is doing a one-year High School exchange in Mondovi, Cuneo, Italy (though she lives in Vicoforte). In preparation, she took a three-month intensive class in Italian before leaving, since all her classes - of which there are several other languages (French, Spanish and German) - are taught in Italian. Audrey and Dennis have one other daughter, Lanna, 20, who attends the University of Idaho, studying Business & Personnel Management.

Audrey has been very involved in Girl Scouts since Lanna joined a Nevada troop at age six, transferring to Pullman at age eight. She saw both daughters through Brownie, Junior, Cadet, and Senior levels, and remains an active troop leader. In addition to this activity, she enjoys reading historical novels, watching musical movies and listening to soft music when she has the chance.
