Who is Michael Tarabulski? you ask. He is a reference librarian who started working at WSU in the Veterinary Medicine/Pharmacy library last summer and then started splitting his time between Vet/Med and Owen Science and Engineering Library. He currently travels between Owen , Brain Education and Media Materials Services in Holland and he has reduced his total working time to 4/5 of a full time position so that he can spend more time raising his five year old daughter, Lilly. Michael and his wife, Sheila O'Brien and their daughter live in Moscow. Sheila is a professor of American Literature at University of Idaho and Lilly was adopted from Dnepropetrovsk in the Ukraine. His favorite TV show is Barney… he doesn't have much choice. "Its better than Teletubbies, anyway" he snorts. He first came to the Palouse in 1991 for a grant position in the special collections department of the University of Idaho's Library, soon met Sheila and decided he liked it here on the Palouse. He was forced to spend 1992-1995 in exile as a researcher for the US Army Corps of Engineers based St Louis. He returned to Moscow in 1996-1997 and then, travelling on a Fullbright Grant awarded to Sheila, the two of them lived in Lodz, Poland. Michael enjoyed learning and speaking Polish. His favorite Polish word is the word for beetle chrząszcz. Yes, now you try to pronounce it. Michael, who has an archives specialty from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, is enjoying his first year in public services, "on the other side of the desk" as he puts it. He draws guidance from the three years with the US Army Corps of Engineers where he required the assistance of reference librarians and archivists on his visits to archives around the country. Michael also holds a BA from Beloit College and MA (Anthropology) from Syracuse University. Michael and his family also share a home with an English Setter named Maggie, four ornate box turtles (Terrepene ornata ornata) and an abundance of turtle statutes. Many of the statuettes were on display in the Owen Library display case last June and July. Recently, Michael's award winning documentary of archeologist Alonzo Pond was shown at WSU. It will be added to the MM&R collection soon for those of you who missed it. jc 02/28/00 |
