HAPPY, ENTHUSIASTIC AND FULFILLED

Meet Kathy Parkins, a new employee in Media Material & Reserves (MM&R) in Holland Library. Kathy joined the libraries on August 2nd 1999, and bubbles with enthusiasm about her job. She is very happy because all the elements that are important to her are included in her position — it's challenging but not too much, busy enough to keep her occupied but not frantic, great co-workers, and her social needs are fulfilled by the daily contact with students and faculty. She is also delighted because, when she had to give up her previous position as Lead Baker for WSU due to an injury, she didn't know what she was going to do.

But she is a motivated person. She enrolled in computer courses at Lewis-Clark College in Lewiston to learn "all I could about computers" over this past summer. This endeavor didn't go unnoticed, and while holding a volunteer position at the Employee Development office at WSU's Human Resources, she was encouraged to apply for the position she now holds, Media Assistant II. She so impressed her interviewers that she was hired, and hasn't looked back.

NO MORE EARLY MORNINGS!

A native of Moscow, Kathy commutes to Pullman in her new Subaru. Her hours have flip-flopped since being Lead Baker, when she worked from 3:00 a.m. - noon.  Now, her schedule is from 11:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. during which time she oversees and manages all the instructional tapes (16 mm., video, etc.) that are used as reserves for classes. Students come in to MM&R to view them as they cannot go out of the library, so there are times when, as she puts it, "it is all go as one student after another comes in to check out a 1-hr loan."

ROSES, PAINTING AND ROMANCE

Kathy and her husband, Terry, have two grown daughters and two grandchildren. Both daughters, Tami and Kerri, graduated from Moscow High School and WSU. They both are in Speech & Hearing Therapy. Kerri, the youngest, received her masters from Lewis-Clark College in Portland, Oregon in May 1999 and has recently secured a position at the Children's Hospital in Seattle. Tami, the eldest, is enrolled in the Master's program at WSU and divides her day between her studies and her two young children.

Among her hobbies, Kathy enjoys gardening, and is a rose enthusiast. She has lots of great tips to give out if you want your roses to have bigger and better blooms. She also loves to paint (water colors, pen and ink, acrylic on canvas, tole painting), collecting and drying wild flowers, calligraphy, travelling and walking, and she has four full-size quilts to her credit. She likes all kinds of music, and enjoys romantic movies and books. She also still loves to bake!
