Washington State University
University Publications (“WSU Pubs”), 1891 forward

Linear Feet of Shelf Space: 336

Washington State University (WSU) Publications have been acquired by the Libraries from many sources. Some items are transferred directly by the University’s printing department. Many other materials have been forwarded by the Library’s serials cataloging unit. Other items come directly from university departments, and a significant number of publications have been donated by individuals. In 1970-75, Library employees prepared a library card catalog for the WSU Publications. That catalog was transcribed and adapted by Tyler Evans and Jeff Zundel in 2005-2006 and serves as the basis for the “finding aid format” list below.

COLLECTION HISTORY

“WSU Publications” is an effort to amass all publications of the University. The effort began in 1955. Until 1977, the publications were managed as part of the university archives. In that year, office records were separated from the publications in order to follow the spirit of the Washington State public records laws. The separation was all but complete; nonetheless, small quantities of non-published materials -- records -- remain among the WSU Publications.

DESCRIPTION

WSU Publications includes materials ranging from old student handbooks to pamphlets issued for specific events. WSU Publications includes many prominent items such as the College Catalog (WSU 4), the Student Directory (WSU 135), Commencement programs (WSU 86), the Annual Time (class) Schedule (WSU 142), and so on. WSU Publications omits the most numbers of the student newspaper, the Evergreen; this title is available on microfilm in the general collection of the Library. The various newspapers meant for university employees are included, however. WSU Publications also includes the many pamphlets and brochures produced by the Agricultural Experiment Stations and the Extension Service. Also included are many, many announcements, posters, flyers and similar materials from academic and support departments. Lastly, WSU Publications includes many materials that were produced on campus but not directly by the university. The most prominent examples of these are athletic game program and press books (WSU 31), especially football programs.

ARRANGEMENT

WSU Publications are arranged by department of origin. The larger arrangement is based on a disrupted ordering of an alphabetical sequence of the many departments, first employed in about 1955. Over time many new departments have been added without regard for the original effort at alphabetization. In addition, many department names have been changed, further disrupting the original alphabetical sequence.

ACCESS

The quasi-random order of University departments in the following list requires use of indexed or full-text searching to locate specific items. Those who wish to consult the WSU Publications are encouraged to use computer access and searching. The technique involves the “find” command integrated in common browser and text-management programs.

Items are identified by a “WSU Pubs” number, which serves as a location number and a call number. This number should be used to request items.

The majority of materials in this collection are stored in archival containers. Each set of materials is distinguished from others based on the organization or department that produced the particular documents. Some sets are collected in a single container while others require several containers. Some materials may be in poor condition, and should be treated with care when handling.

SUGGESTED CITATION

Individual items from WSU Publications should be cited according to the rules for publications. Optionally, a citation may include the information that the items were located among WSU Publications, Manuscripts, Archives, and Special Collections, Washington State University Libraries.
