ORGANIZATIONAL SKETCH

Washington State University's library began, in conjunction with the opening of the college, in 1892. The library has been housed in the "Crib," the first University building; Old College Hall; the Administration Building (now Thompson Hall); Bryan Hall and other locations on campus. With the opening of Holland Library in 1952 for reader use, the Social Science Divisional Library was created. The Social Science Library included reference, periodicals, documents, reserve books, pamphlets, maps, and microfilm, as well as general books in the social sciences. It was located on the Second Floor of Holland Library. From 1976 to 1978 the Humanities and Social Science Divisional Libraries were merged in phases to become Holland Public Services.

Chiefs of the Social Science Library have been:
1955-1959 Clarence Gorchels
1959-1961 Suzanne F. Chaney, Acting Chief
1961-1962 Cecil Roberts
1962-1968 George Rausch
1968-1974 Eleanor Naffizger
1975-1978 Pauline Lilje

ARRANGEMENT AND DESCRIPTION

The records reflect part of the working file of the Social Science Divisional Library from its creation in 1952 to its integration with the Humanities Library. Eleanor Naffizger and Pauline Lilje are the primary correspondents. Dating from 1942 to 1978, with the bulk falling from 1962 to 1978, the records concern the organization and growth of the Social Science Library and Holland Library.

The records were not in any order when received and have been arranged in an alphabetized single series. Included in the records are correspondence and memoranda to and from the Division Chiefs, drafts of the Social Science Library Manual and policy statements, blueprints of Holland Library remodeling plans, budget statistics and time slip information concerning student assistants, and organizational charts dating from 1962 to 1976.
