Stephen Thomas Avard
Papers, 1872-1956
The papers were donated to the Washington State University Library in 1957 by Norman McClure. They were processed by Lawrence Stark in May of 1973.
The Stephen Avard papers consist of correspondence, business papers, legal documents, souvenirs, reminiscences and photographs concerning Stephen Thomas Avard (1880-1951), his brother Charles William Avard (ca. 1875-1956), his wife Julia Hamaker Eastman Avard (1911-1956), his mother-in-law Sarah Phillips Hamaker Simonton (ca. 1840-ca. 1925), and his wife's step-father Rolvin David Simonton (1843-1915). The papers document the Avard's emigration from England to California in the 1880's, their homesteading efforts at Nespelem on the Colville Indian Reservation in northeast Washington; Rolvin Simonton's work on railroads in northern Idaho and other aspects of frontier life in the far west.
