PROJECT HISTORY

The typescript essays in this collection were prepared as part of a project commemorating the Territorial Centennial of Washington in 1953. Most of these essays, along with others not included in this collection, were published in various newspapers throughout the State of Washington. In 1954 all of the essays (a total of 48) were published together in a pamphlet as Grassroot Cuttings: Sources of the History of the Territory of Washington, by the Longview Daily News.

Here is the description of the project from the Preface to the 1954 published volume:

"Grassroot Cuttings" was a project undertaken by the History Committee of the Washington Territorial Centennial, 1953. It was designed to provide the public and the students in the public schools with a series of excepts of original sources of Washington history of preterritorial and territorial days. The hope of the committee was that the newspapers of the state would publish one number a week so that there might be a total of fifty-two for the Centennial year. Through the courtesy of the Washington Newspaper Publishers Association, Inc., and its manager, Mr. C. B. Lambfromboise, and the Allied Daily Newspapers of Washington and its manager, Mr. Lew Selvidge, copies were furnished in mimeographed form and sent over the wire service. Since the newspapers of the state were crowded with many other matters pertaining to the Centennial, the coverage over the State was not as great as the committee had hoped it would be.
