The Alaska Development Committee Records of the Tacoma Chamber of Commerce were donated to the Washington State University Libraries in 1955 by George E. Tilliston and reaccessioned in June 1978 (78-25). The records were processed by Patricia M. Gourd in November 1979.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION

The Alaska Development Committee of the Tacoma Chamber of Commerce was established in 1933 for the expressed purpose of assisting Alaskans in the development of Alaska Territory, increasing goodwill between Tacoma and the communities of Alaska, and bringing the businesses of Tacoma closer to those of Alaska. C. C. Garland served as Chairman of the Alaska Development Committee from 1933 through 1938. Jay W. McCune, Traffic Manager of the Chamber, held the office of secretary of the committee from 1938 through 1941.

ARRANGEMENT AND DESCRIPTION

The records of the Alaska Development Committee of the Tacoma Chamber of Commerce are arranged alphabetically by subject in a single series. Included in the records are correspondence, newspaper clippings, hearing transcripts, and information on shipping rates to Alaskan ports. The records date from February 1933 to January 1946. Principal correspondents include: C. C. Garland and Jay W. McCune.
